unique, great location - very little street noise.
Staff were very helpful and always on hand. The room quality was very high - the recent refurbishment has really focussed on top end materials and furnishings and for a hotel in central New York, the room was of a good size. Its central location in NYC is very helpful to get uptown or downtown and its situation gives an unusually peaceful night sleep in such a busy city. The roof garden was very nice, as were the bars, but some of the hotel claims are overdone. Cocktails are expensive by the time you add on service and tax.
Very Very cool. From a British viewpoint it is like Malmaison but taken to the next level and with the addition of 5 star service. The concierge are very good at getting you into those 'hard to book' restaurants. The private guests only rooftop bar is very nice.
the room and the position and the "edginess" of the hotel our first room (before we changed) only had a shower and not also a bath
Valet took >45 minutes after being told 10-15 (I allowed 20). Had to request iron, wastes time. Tub drain was fully clogged and GROSS so water did not drain. Shower vent grate was FULL of GROSS dust + mold. Noise outside from traffic, garbage trucks + roof party letting out kept us awake ALL NIGHT, absurd! Sounded like windows on Lex.ave. were open, but they weren't, they're just inadequate!
location is fabulous, rooftop bar was very nice. the room was very small.
The rooms were cute. Not to small. Stayed here for New Year's Eve. Wanted a bucket of ice for the room so my wife and I could keep a bottle of champagne cold. They actually charged us $5 for the bucket of ice. Not even Motel 6 charges for ice. Room was also very hot and a lot of noise from the street and hallway. Bed hard and uncomfortable.
Location is great - the art is amazing and the roof top terrace restaurant/ bar is top
Room set up Very poor service! I had water & juice poured over me during breakfast with no apologies! Tea was served without tea cup! Bathroom light was out for one day and not replaced. Laundry list was not provided despite repeated requests.
The service, room, restaurant, location were excellent.
The staff was really friendly and helpful. The hotel design and atmosphere were great. The bed was very uncomfortable - really hard. I stay at alot of boutique / pricey hotels and this was the worst bed I've had.
It was close to union square and was cheap compared to other hotels. I walk a lot so getting to the east village was a short walk as well. Have to share toilets and shower. Other than that it was totally fine. If you are in NYC visiting you are rarely in your room anyways.
Great location, clean facilities and reasonable price if you don't mind shared bathrooms.
The hotel was nicer than I expected. The decor was pleasant (wooden doors, etc.), though not ornate. The shared bathrooms are mildly inconvenient, but not bad once you get the hang of it.
- nice hotel - great location - good price - noisy air/conditioning - dirty curtain in a bathroom
Location - on a quiet street in Gramercy Room - while it's small, it was very cozy. It felt like you're living in an apartment in Manhattan. Cleanliness. Unique interior - it's old, but has been kept up beautifully. It was too hot and it didn't seem like I could control the temperature in the room. Luckily I was able to crack the window open. The WIFI was rather spotty in my room, and I reported it to the clerk downstairs.
Great for travelers on a budget. Very well maintained and clean. Excellent customer service. Sharing bathroom was no problem during my stay (07/20-24/16)--never any wait, and other guests were considerate. Room was small, but I was only there for sleeping. I loved the quiet neighborhood which helped to immerse me into the New York experience in a way that would not have been possible had I chosen a mainstream hotel in the center of a more touristy area.
Price is good, as long as you are clear on what you get. Rooms are small, outdated, and my room did not have a sink. Realized that my room would not have a bathroom - shared bathrooms in the hallway, but other rooms I've stayed in here have sinks in the room.
A few blocks away from Union Square Safe area Near many restaurants/businesses Clean, budget friendly! There's a sort of old New York romance surrounding this building, so let me explain in detail for future travelers; this hotel has not changed in many years. Most rooms have TV's the size of computer monitors. Walking into the room feels like going back in time, with an AC unit strapped to the window, and a lush wallpaper that your grandmother would envy. That being said, this is the perfect hotel. It's addordable, it is clean, and the staff is always helpful. Just a few blocks away, is the gorgeous Union Square, with the subway that connects to all the parts of New York. You can be in Times Square faster than you can write a review for this hotel! The streets were safe (I walked alone around midnight often during my stay) and the surrounding neighborhood is rather gorgeous in the morning light. If you're in the mood for something meaty in the morning, there's a lovely assortment of scattered food carts, one in particular that makes amazing egg, sausage, bacon and cheese bagel sandwiches fresh off the grill in front of Union square park. He also makes a mean Falafel in the early hours. After all the positive things I have to say about the hotel, I do feel obliged to mention some things that would normally affect one's stay. Certainly, none of these things bothered me; I have a soft spot for old hotels. However, be prepared to notice that the elevator is about as small as an airplane restroom, and the hallways are as narrow as your closet. To occupy as little space as possible and stay affordable, the hallways sacrifice width, and in return, even the most affordable single-bed quarters are roomy enough to do yoga in. If you go the affordable route and choose a room with no bathroom, do not be alarmed or skeptical, the bathtubs and toilets are cleaned very regularly, more often than I would say the one in your own home, if I may be so bold? The only thing to worry about is waiting for restroom use; there are four toilets and showers on each floor. Be prepared to either shower very early or very late, else face a line wait. Other than that, the AC system runs lovely, and everything is cozy.
Cute little no-frills hotel. My single room had a sink, which was very helpful, and I only had to wait to use the shared bathrooms once during my five-night stay. Excellent location within walking distance of Union Square and several subway lines, as well as lots of restaurants, coffee shops, banks, shopping, and grocery stores. Quiet neighbourhood and quiet building. As many reviewers have said, the bathrooms and halls are kept very clean. The mattress was on the hard side, and my key card would often get de-magnetized throughout the day (though staff at the front desk didn't give me any trouble when I needed it reset). No dealbreakers or any cons that would prevent me from staying here again.
The Location and price is the reason I stay here. The Shared bathroooms
Location - close to 3rd ave and union square / village the bed was awful
