Staff was discourteous , they intentionally tried to push a bad quality small room to us . When we bluntly refused to accept the small room, and told that we would not stay in this property, they offer other better room, however still on lower floor . Overall a good property but extremely bad employees attitude, pushing bad rooms 1st to customers. Not expected from such chain of hotels
The hotel is conveniently located in the middle of thorough-fare street for shopping, recreation and dining.
Ambience and location Cleanliness
Very comfortable stay. Room service was excellent and very fast. Although check out was 12, the hotel was very cooperative and let me stay till 2pm without any surcharge. Excellent staff. Highly recommended. Location also great for shopping in Shanghai.
It's central location My room was too small
My wife was very happy with the shopping area around the hotel. And close to MRT station.
Hotel was well located so you could walk to the shops and the door staff were very good at recommending things to do.. Reception staff were not very helpfull but i think the language barrier is a problem.
Location and good customer service Nothing
close to nan jin road the rooms, they look old
The location The rooms are fairly small
Convenience to shopping and food.
Location is excellent, staff extremely helpful
Great location. Spacious and very comfortable room. Staff was very helpful.
The lobby is a grand receiving area. The daily treats corner is excellent for afternoon snacks and quick bite on the run. The breakfast buffet is grand and delicious.
Room situation was excellent. Facilities- mediocre at best. The gym was fine but the pool was abysmal. Service- I get that the service in China is bad, I get it. But come on, train your service better. I couldn't get a taxi for half an hour, and the guy outside was trying to get a taxi for me. If they were smart, they would have called a taxi through phone.
Location, service and friendly staff was very outstanding. Communication was excellent. I would highly recommend City Hotel Shanghai to friends and family. I would like to return to Shanghai one day soon and would certainly stay at CHS/ I didn't like the fact that I wasn't able to stay longer!!
Very good location. Enjoyable restaurant, swimming pool and sauna. Excellent buffet.
staff are helpful. Location is great.
Very good swimming pool, good breakfast of Western style The rooms need reparation
Good value for money good service good location close to Metro station nice restaurant and friendly staff
Great location. Staff spoke English. Clean, comfortable rooms. Will definitely stay there again. No complaints.
The room was so clean.Explaination was written by chinese.english and japanese. I'm japanese .so I was very helped .and the hotelman could speak easy japanese language .I didn't feel any stress. If had the opotunity to go changhai .I hope to stay this hotel again!
Awesome location at a great price. This was more a 3 star rather than 4 star hotel.
Hotel staff were polite and helpful. Conveniently located. Relax and clean. Had good food within walking distant. Will go back again for next visit.
Nice modern decor, friendly and helpful staff Bathroom is like something out of a hospital ward
location is good. and hotel itself is classic. food disappointing. also altho room non smoking, the hotel is full of smokers and smoke in the public areas.
the location of the hotel , the bathroom was not so clean
All the staffs were excellent Nothing
Excellent. Top location for all Shanghai destinations. Spacious rooms (including standard Art Deco). Outstanding personal service and staff. Home away from home. Delicious breakfast options, al a cart & standard continental buffet. Flair, design and modern throughout. Welcome drinks, special spa offers, many extras etc (ask for upgrades, very receptive). Top of the line 5 star property that clearly offers more then the big luxury hotel chains.
The decor throughout the hotel is luxurious. The Art Deco room was very comfortable and more than met my expectations. The bathroom was huge and extremely well appointed. A lot of thought has gone into providing "nice little touches". Although there are designated smoking/non-smoking areas in the restaurant, I did find the smell of smoke unpleasant.
Very attentive staff Difficult location from which to find taxis
location, very near railway station, various food available surrounding, walking distance to nanjing road. breakfast is not included in the room rate and very expensive, the room rate paid is not value for money since the hotel outlook is not like 5 star hotel
Seems that pics of web are of another hotel or very old and not aupdated. First night received a very bad smelling room, staff came and pumped out something .....unbelievable from bathroom. Day after they gave us a better room. Will not stay there again. Price is not referred to what we received
The rooms were very comfortable and showed great attention to detail from the huge and superbly comfortable bed to the tv in the shower recess. Service was attentive and efficient. On arrival we were escorted to our room and " introduced " to our room and all its numerous facilities. Room service was prompt and well priced.
spa was very nice and all staff were extremely helpful - definitely a pleasant place to be based out of, and a very central location for such a big, spread out city. lobby slightly dated, but possible it was just Chinese sense of decor. Recommend signing up for breakfast package, as we did not and ended up paying $50/breakfast for 2 which is ridiculously expensive over there
Location, price/quality, gourmet corner! Room service comes very early (7.00-8.00 in the morning)
the room was very comfortable - perfect location for exploring around shanghai. only stayed 1 night as a stop over before continuing on my journey, but gym was very good. i arrived at around 9am - normally check in is at 2pm; i asked if they could accommodate me; they said they could, but i would have to pay half a day extra!!! i have done this before at other hotels and never been an issue. also, first check in counter the staff said no room available so i waited an extra half hour and spoke to someone else who said there was a room available! crazy! also rooms looking a bit dated now, but otherwise comfortable; and yes i did pay the extra half a day! :(
The location of the hotel is good. The pictures shown in bookin.com website is different from waht we got. the rooms needs refubishment.
Closed to city center. Staff friendly. Have to modernize furniture of the room.
should be free no $21/day
- Good breakfast selection Oldfashion shower
Modern, great service,, good food and wine. Convent to city and shopping. I will stay again.
Great executive lounge, comfortable rooms, friendly personnel. The bathrooms still no separate shower and very small
the people working there really try their best and the service is excellent.
Location and convenience to subway and expressway. The shower was the worst that I had experienced in many hotels and that water smelled foul. It was impossible to regulate the water temperature. If I had more time I would have switched rooms.
Clean, nicely furnished room. Good location, 5 mins walk to Yu Yuan Garden (touristy shopping area of Shanghai). The hotel overcharged to my credit card (excess of approx usd 100), and when I asked for a refund, they refused to refund me in cash. At first, they asked me to consume food/services at the hotel to use up this excess amount, which is ridiculous! How can they even think of taking my money and then forcing me to consume their goods & services?! When I refused to accept this form of "refund", they told me that it will take at least one month to refund the money to my credit card. The hotel manager was uncooperative, and gave me the Take It Or Leave It attitude. So I was left with no choice but to wait hopefully for the hotel to return my money.
I reserved a double bed room for 8 night, I only got a king room. A staff promised us will changing by tommorow, but he never fulfilled it untill 8th days check out time. The bathroopartition made of glass & PVC frame is very unconfortable for us when shower and defecate. The breakfast never change from day to day.
The hotel is a regular four star hotel with all the amenities we can look for at that rank. The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel overlooks a square with a fountain in the middle of a huge crossroads and it was a very interesting experience to see the local people gather there in the evening, jogging around the fountain, walking the dog, playing with the children. Worth to sit on the fountain and have a look in the evening. Exquisite!! As we needed an extra bed, the room was a bit small for that. However we rearranged the furniture and managed to put it comfortably by the window. The view from there is to huge buildings of flats. Not very interesting.
free internet connection at the room breakfest service
nice location, nice and friendly stuff, everything you need can be found in the surrounding area, easy to communicate in english language which is great for a hotel in china
Good location Very poor knowledge of english at the reception. Not friendly at the reception.
Roomy. New decoration. Hotel staff (e g Kelly) tried to be helpful. Close to old town tourist spots. Not on subway line. New brand name trying to learn international standards. Attached restaurant not synchronized with hotel service scope.
Beautiful decor and comfortable ambient. Value for money with added free services/facility such as breakfast and internet. I booked four rooms in all, but none were non-smoking as I have requested. The first male personnel was not attentive, and gave me a room with 2 single beds and 1 access card and 1set of breakfast voucher even though I booked a double room for 2 pax. He informed me that he was unable to give me a second card as the machine was faulty. Door gap was too large and allowed cigarette smoke to enter.
The rooms were great. Very modern and clean. The staff was kind, and most spoke enough english to be helpful. Overall, I thought it was a great value!
Always was OK
Location close to the Yuyuan Bazaar was excellent. Very comfortable room, spacious, nice bathroom (would like to have had a bathtub, but that was only available in more expensive rooms). Nice lobby, halls and elevators. Pleasant staff. Reception staff did not speak very good English, so getting information on anything beyond the hotel was quite difficult (help with buses, for example). The breakfast was focused more on Asian items. Breads, pastries were very inferior to other hotels such as Holiday Inn and Days Inn chains in China. Coffee was very poor. An espresso machine and cream for the coffee would help. Gaudy decor.
nothing but location Everything but location. Staffs are horrible and rude. Room is not clean and dark. It's loud when I should sleep - I heard staffs are talking each other on the hall. Blankets are all over the floor on the hall - hope they didn't use it for my bed.
Location Anybody speaks English, the service is poor, the room was dirty, nobody helps with the bags, the hosting service was bad. We do not think the hotel is 4 stars.
Location is walking distance to the bund Doesn't meet 4 star hotel rate at all. Bathroom has smells, and you hear any noise from next doors. Overall not impressed experience.
Location - ten mins from Subway, five mins to the bund Old and tired hotel, behind main street with smokey rooms as they can not offer non smoking room

Near the Beautiful scenery of the river. Quiet, but not far from restaurants or CBD. Nice staff bed size. Not that near subway station
Location is the best in Shanghai tour. Close to Nanjing East subway station(Line 2, Less than a block away from the Bund boardwalk (to see Pudong skyscrapers). Restaurants, Shops and stores all in walking distance. Excellent bathroom. Not many staffs can speak English.
Location We booked a superior nonsmoking room that was listed as one King and two single beds. The first room we were shown stunk of smoke/only two single beds. The second room was not smelly but had one king sized bed. The hotel refused to provide a rollaway.

Location Old and worn rooms.
Location is good. convenient for travel not like a 4-star hotel at all. small room and beddings look like has been used for ages.

The location can not be better. I could not get the internet to work on my lap top. Like all 5 star hotels the mini bar is expensive, but just go to Lawson across the street for a cheap drink.
Hotel is clean, situated right next to the very busy shopping area. The hotel concierge (Robert) has an excellent knowledge and has been very helpful. The only thing that I did not like was when we arrived, they gave us two rooms with single bed, instead of double bed.
Very nice hotel. Comfor level was high & the location was excellent. I loved the stay at Howard Johnson Plaza Shanghai. Nothing I didn't like. Everything was good.
Price for hotel was awesome. Also, everything is really nearby Deposit at the check-in, it's really expensive. USD 250.
Great Hotel in good situation to popular shopping and eating area ie 2 mins to Nan Jing Road and 10 min walk to The Bund area None
Location and service. The beds are like sleeping on a 4 by 8 board. Will not stay there again because of the bedding.
good quality for a reasonable price. perfect location in the centre of shanghai
location facilities are pretty old
inside hotel ok, outside very few speak english best to go with organized group
The card security system is a good measure to prevent unauthorize visit to guest room level.
The hotel is clean and well maintained. Surprised to find out that the service speaks english by default as a lot of international travelers stay at this hotel. Not much
The rooms facing the plaza are quite nice and have a good view. (The rooms facing the back don't have a view.) The air-con in the room was not working and I had to request to be transferred to another room. The reception staff were not friendly during check-in but were kind to accomodate the room change request.
The hotel is located in a superb position: just a short walk to the People's Square subway station, where you can get on/off one of the three lines interconnecting there. Almost everything essential is within walking distance: eateries, shopping complexes, 24/7 convenience stores and even some tourist attractions. The rear entrance to the hotel faces one of the most important, and crowded, pedestrian areas in Shanghai: business on both side of the street goes on until 10-11 pm or so. The hotel staff, with the exception of the receptionist who checked me in, seemed to lack the most basic good manners toward their guests: when I walked in the Majesty Plaza, the porter didn't even offer to take my luggage, while the security guy strolling in the lobby was clearly not used to greeting people entering or leaving the hotel premises. Three cons: my room was a bit smelly, since I was given a smoking room in spite of my request for a non-smoking one; at nighttime, the noise from the street was loud enough to disturb your rest and, last but not least, the room was clean but not spotless. In my opinion, the hotel as a whole, suffers from its former 5 star rating: a more glorious past that,at the time, seems to be definitively past.
Good reception, concierge and housekeeping. Prompt response
it is an old hotel and rooms need renovation. The lobby area is very grandy thats why this hotel is 5 stars. other than that it is 3 stars standard. Recepetionist was very rude and busy all the time. They dont have a good understanding of good customer service. Not all of them to be fair just a man who was a total jerk
Location is perfect (hotel entrance just on Nanjing road) , free internet 24 hour
Location right on the shopping district downtown. Really fashionable hotel. Asked for a non-smoking room but got a smoking room and were unable to change. The front desk was really rude and unable to explain the priceI, which for a start was not the same as on Hotel.com´s webpage. In my room you could hear the honking of the cars all night. Room was a little run down and tv channels were not installed correctly, hence could not see any tv. Almost only Chinese tv channels. Would recommend hotel Howard Johnson, Shanghai Plaza 100 m from this hotel. Better service, better breakfast, better rooms and better pool and gym section.
The hotel was clean and the staff was very friendly. Was upgraded on check-in to a Suite. The room was in good condition with plenty of room. I would stay there again. Nothing I didn't like, Maud provided cplimentary bottled water daily which was nice.
Spacious room Luxurious decorations an furniture Kind staff Centric location Amazing sky bar In my rate was not included breakfast, and I feel I pay a lot per night Rooms were not cleaned up throughly every day
Very good location, no problem with early check in . You can take the subway (metro) from the airport (Line 2) to the hotel door (People Square station). Safety is poor. Anyone can access the elevator. No security and no need to use the room key to get the lift.
Very nice staff !
We stayed at this hotel only for 3 days, at the door you are welcomed by many belman and doors are opened by females in white uniforms, very classy. The person who checks you in brings you to the room, we had to call for our bags as they may had forgotten to bring them up. You have free internet phone to call international, the beds are like haven, so make sure you have a wakeup call in the morning. The views are really nice overlooking the river. Upstairs on the 14th floor you can enjoy a drink overlooking the skyline of Shanghai, just beautiful. Breakfast is very expensive (118 -270 rmb), but that comes with a 5 star hotel, service is very good expect one morning when I had a breakfast meeting, we had the feeling that our plates were taken away, so we could leave. But if you can get a good roomrate at this hotel as we did and an upgrade, this is the hotel to be. Metro is 15 minutes walk that is the only downside of the this location, but what do you expect there is always a rollsroys...
This is the best Peninsula Hotel in the World.
An exellent hotel with very good facilities. Its location is in a nice part of Shanghai and very handy to other stes.
Location is good That is not 5 star hotel!
Staff in coffee area in particular very good Room was a little too warm, don't air con was able to blow cold air
Very friendly staff. Good location. Very good response to queries and extremely helpful. They do not vacuum the room during your entire stay.
as always its just a good mid priced option for business and pleasure with good staff and good service o
room cleanliness lousy breakfast
The hotel overall was very comfortable and was conveniently located to restaurants and stores. I was disapppointed that the bus service to the airport was canceled, and thus was forced to pay the higher service fees of a taxi to go to the airport.
Location, nice and comfortable rooms Reception not organised, I have some problem during check in. Breakfast price is far above your 13,5 USD ( 178 RMB - 25 USD aprox)
the bed was very comfortable The carpet in the hallway was dirty
I unfortunately did not spend much time in the hotel, but I slept very well, the beds were comfortable and the bathroom spacious. I was given a smokers' room and so was not very happy with the smell!
The bed is very comfortable, as Marriott is popular for that.
The location, the quality of the premises, the view The fact that it was nearly impossible to communicate with the staff in english, although they were very keen to help
Very good hotel in the centre of Shanghai. Attractive areas of Shanghai at walking distance. Room at 55 floor with exceptional view. Good service.
Room was amazing and what a view. Staff was great, speaking English not a problem and very friendly and helpful with arranging taxi service. I feel for the price of the room that free internet should be included. If persons had to pay for TV service they would choose an alternate hotel and in this day and age internet is a necessity.
Nice view. Nice location. Too crowded by the pool. It was not only for the hotels guests. They seemed very unproffessional, and in manko of towels they tried to give me one that was aleready used??!
The hotel is located just adjacent to the Yu Garden, ah historic and picturesque neighborhood the recalls the Shanghai of yesteryear. It is fascinating to walk through the little lanes and see the ancient buildings. The Yu Garden is a real gem as well. The hotel is located just above the Yu Garden subway station and could not be more convenient for getting around the city. The hotel is clean and modern. The staff was wonderful. The executive lounge had great food and a terrific view. Our room was large and comfortable. All in all this is my favorite hotel in Shanghai. The mattress in our room needed to be replaced--it was a bit lumpy.
Hotel staff spoke English and were very helpful. The room was beautiful and the location was excellent being next to Yuan Garden Mentro. You can walk to the bund from here in about 30min. Try out the pool and steam room! Construction was taking place, so could hear hammering at times. Try to get a river view that actually looks out at the river and China Town. (like the pool the does) vs. the side that looks out at the city or the other side that looks out at nothing really special. Internet is not free! Catching a taxi was very hard. There are just jot enough to go around.
Very spacious room, huge comfy bed & free standing bath. Great view of the city. The rooftop bar was excellent and the location was good for sightseeing. Room was surprisingly quiet for location- and I am a light sleeper. Would definately stay here again. The 3rd floor restaurant was tired looking, and the food was ok but nothing special. I regretted it almost the minute I sat down and saw the tattered menu. The breakfast was over priced for what was served.
Beautiful hotel in excellent location. Spacious rooms with good business facilities. Staff were generally helpful. Some staff were less helpful than others - it would improve the hotel's profile to enhance and monitor consistency of staff behaviour. The good staff were actually outstanding.
Hotel was very clean and the bed was just comfortable. The massage that we asked the concierge to book for a house call was a godsend and cheap. Wireless is not free. Only 2 bottles of water were complimentary. A lot of staff did not speak English.
to spent time at the 17. floor with the wonderful view our room was just opposite of the 17. floor kitchen, and we woke up early in the morning with the noise coming from there, as the door of the kitchen left open.
The room was amazing, in particular, the huge restroom.
