The room was spacious for NYC standards and very clean and well kept. The furnishings were modern and kept up to date. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed our stay. It would have been nice to have a refrigerator in the room to keep our water, wine and cheese cold.
Nothing I liked. Worst costumer service!! Front desk guests service were so rude. My room was already paid and booked for but still had to wait two hours just to get my room!
We appreciated the entire stay. It was quiet, friendly staff, clean, accomodating, close to subway. Good food . We had to leave. We have recommended it to others and will be back.

Friendly and accommodating staff! Loved that everyone was there willing to help. Also liked the security of staff checking to make sure that all guests coming into the hotel were in fact supposed to be there. Didn't like that there wasn't a fridge and/or microwave in the room given the price. Room was very nice but for the price I would've expected at least a fridge.

Nice interior All staff Ive come across felt like security. They dont respond to greetings. When they selectively ask to see your room keycard to enter the hotel and you see the people in front of you stroll right in while you get "carded" almost everytime...Im a well groomed mid 20's asian business man on vacation what more do you want? And in the heart of korea-town no less! I avoided the staff for the rest of my stay due to their less than friendly disposition and most times they seemed too busy to talk to you because they are allll on their phones textingg! Mainly speaking of night staff. For such a historic Landmark of a Hotel the staff certainly takes away from its authenticity,beauty and glamour. As far as the rooms go everthing seemed fairly clean and nice. Only issue was the brown water I had to shower in and the air condition wasnt working the first day but their engineering staff promptly fixed the A/C unit.
Location, rooms are comfy , free internet My mother's shoes were stolen, Along with my nephew's (2 and 1/2 yo) pillow and toys. The shoes were inside a suitcase the entire time which makes the case even worse. We complained at the front desk, but the staff were unapologetic and did nothing to solve the issue.

Location was good, not a superior room. Hotel offered a 30% dicount we paid over $200 a night not happy about paying the higher price. Told that I could not get the discount as I had booked through Booking.com Do they have any superior rooms as booked? Very poor quality of rooms offered. From some of the reviews I expected better.

I loved the position of the hotel and the comfort of the bed. That's all you needed really , it wasn't a big room but you knew That going in , the water was hot for such a big hotel and Whenever l needed help from reception etc it was not a problem. Didn't find the wifi coverage very good.

Nothing Everything, poor service, not clean, there was hair in the bath, a mouse in my room, rooms need updating. Cues to check in are rediculous. I can honestly say this is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and will never go again or recommend to anyone. The only positive is the location, and to be honest I would rather stay further out and get a taxi into the city than stay here again

My husband and I were traveling with our 2 adult children and their traveling companions, so we booked 3 rooms. All rooms were spacious and comfortable. Decor was trendy, with high end amenities. We loved the rooftop bar and had a great meal at the attached restaurant. Location was perfect. Overall, a great stay. Some of the furniture in the room was showing some wear. And the desk chair was the only chair in the room. Also, the closet was very small. Not enough space to hang our clothes and coats.

19th Fl room was clean and very quiet, bedding was high-quality. Near (but not too near) Penn Station. Small bedroom, but big bathroom. No closet, just a small cabinet that could not accommodate a business suit, much less an overcoat. Elevators extremely slow.

minibar was loaded with choices deceptive staff. gave me a different room with a smaller bed than the one I paid for. but after waiting on lobby for an hour after my check in time because the manager hadn't inspected the room, I was too tired and Aggravated to argue!
The staff was amazing. Polite and personable, always willing to help and proactive in resolving any booking issues. Would definitely stay again. Also, there is an amazing shop right on the next corner that has an incredible selection of foods, from ice cream and pizza to a full salad bar, that stays open for your late night cravings. Conveniently close to the hotel. If I must search for something negative to say..... Maybe the room seemed a little cramped? Didn't affect us because we were out and about but had we stayed in I suppose we'd have to use the descriptor "cozy."

Old shower and bathroom
The location is great. The bathrooms are nice. Internet worked well. However it lacks the charm I was expecting from a boutique hotel in New York. The rooms have an old feeling. The decoration in general is fairly old style. And when we tried to get room service for breakfast nobody picked up, we were told we will be called back and after 30 min we just gave up. Not worth the price, I would rather do a Hilton or Hyatt for same price with much better bed, service and vibe.

the location was great! close to times square, empire state bldg. and 5th avenue. Also just steps away from subway. I would stay there again. The staff was very friendly. They are remodeling. the hotel is going to be very nice once completed. Our room was recently remodeled and it was tastefully done.

Perfect location, just a few steps from major stores and 15 min walk to Times Square. Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Just two elevators. For some rooms you could not control the heating, just the cooling air.
It's a nice modern boutique feeling hotel. Staff was nice. After a night of jack hammering (location issue more than their fault) there was no hot water at all in the morning. They refunded a portion of my bill but it was brutal. They should consider also soundproofing the Windows more.

The front desk staff was excellent. The linens were very nice. Blow dryer didn't work. Called housekeeping for clean towels and replacement blow dryer. Waited an hour. Never showed up. Later they cleaned room and left clean towels but no washcloths. It has potential just have not worked out all the kinks yet.
Very nice staff 206 should be a storage closet! Nestled between two fire doors, starting at 4am, the two fire doors slam prohibiting any sleep!!
we were checked in really quick . breakfast was enjoyable . staff at reception were realy helpful in directions and questions . dinner was very good in the evening and brendan bar was very enjoyable bar to drink in. but location location location ,would not be beaten heating system was noisy and lifts slow during busy times.but not bad enough to put us off staying here in the future

Location is great and the subway station is just in the corner of the block. Comlimentary breakfast is just OK, however if you are a familiy, it is important to have breakfast in the hotel in New York. Breakfast is served in the nearby bar& grill and its atmosphere is great. One of the front office staff was very kind and helpful, so I would like to thank her for everthing that she has done. The hotel is very old and needs complete renovation. The rooms are not large enough to accomodate a familiy of four. It seemed the most unclean hotel during our visit to USA. Housekeeping staff is interesting (I guess they need a short course to learn how to behave to customers). In conclusion, location is OK, but nothing else...
When I first got to hotel to check in I was informed that the room I reserved was not available and that I never booked the king room. But this not true I had my confirmation number and the reservation saved on my phone. So she put me in a queen room and charge me 461.00 but the deal I reserved was for only 261.00. So when I check out I was told that 200.00 would go back in my bank but it still hasn't. So I will never book through kayak again. I was robbed 200 dollars and was giving wrong room.
Mo the bartender and Grace at the front desk went above and beyond to make my stay pleasant.

The bed was so comfortable! The location was very central. No business center and no pool.
The restaurant was nice, good food The room was never properly cleaned. I stayed for 6 nights and the room was never fully cleaned. The bathroom mirrors had the same smears the entire stay, the floor was dusty and hairy and I saw the same piles of dirt from day one. The glass shower wall had a soap scum that remained the entire time as did the bathtub. The entire room was dusty and never saw any of it cleaned. And I'm quite certain my sheets weren't even changed daily. I believe the cleaning crew only changed towels and made the bed. I also asked that they did not leave the a/c on 65 each day and i continued to return to an ice box daily!

The staff was very friendly and professional. The even remembered us the next day. Evan was wonderful, positive and up beat. Everyone was very helpful, even moved us when our AC was malfunctioning. Rooms were kind of small but then we were in the a limited amount of space as far as the city was concerned.
I'm not one to write travel reviews but I had such an incredible experience here I felt the need to share! Came here for a staycation (roommates, amirite?) slash birthday celebration and our choice could't have been more perfect. In a word, this spot is snazzy. The decor, fixtures and furnishings are reminiscent of the Prohibition/speakeasy era with a modern, chic twist. Just by standing in the lobby you instantly feel a little more immersed in something cool and vibrant. There is a palpable sense of imminent adventure and intrigue here, definitely a boon to kick off your New York City escapade. Inspiration is abundant here! The rooms are immaculately clean, chic and quiet. Bed is ridiculously comfortable and also features hidden storage drawers, so be sure to check under the huge fluffy down comforters they're topped with! There truly aren't enough adjectives to describe just how accommodating and incredible the staff here is. So friendly! Everyone here is a paragon of guest services for competing establishments to emulate. If you're looking for a stylish, urbane backdrop with ubercool yet welcoming vibe to your Gotham City foray, book with confidence at Archer, it is truly a stay to remember! Check out is at 11, not 12. Only downside to this hotel, otherwise it is magnificent.
Decor was great, rooms were clean and mini bar was stocked with great snacks at reasonable prices ($2 per soda). Rooms were small but this isn't unheard of for Manhattan.
Staff was courteous and friendly. Room and bath were clean. Goodies were on the nightstand every evening when the bed was turned down. We walked and took the subway to where we wanted to go. All directions were precise. Subway was 2 blocks We would stay here again.

Decent location, very convenient to 6 subway which is great to get up and down the east side of Manhattan. Very helpful staff. Not a great few blocks for bars and restaurants and nothing much to speak of in the hotel itself. Wood veneer floors in rooms are probably easier to keep clean but not very comfortable or inviting.
Very nice and large room. Staff was friendly and accommodating. The lobby is small and not overly impressive. The neighborhood is safe but not one of the premier locations in NYC so you'll need to cab or subway to restaurants/meetings/site seeing. Fortunately it is very centrally located. Given what I Paid for the room, I would definitely stay there again Lobby and Immediate Neighboorhood
Wifi was really spotty the first day, and the shower was installed with hot and cold reversed.
Price. Bathrooms were clean and nice. Spacious. The facility felt very old and outdated. The quality of the floors, rugs, couches, shades was all poor. The floors were fake wood linoleum that moved around under your feet. The rooms need upgrades. The views out the back are straight into a construction site.
They were incredibly understaffed for the week after Christmas. It took an hour and a half to check in and 2 hours to get our car at checkout. Would never stay here again
The next two nights they changed the room and the room was great. The first two nights room was not having heating. it was uncomfertable.
After long days of exploring NYC, the quiet beauty of the Avalon gave a wonderful respite. The rooms are generous in size, extremely clean, and oh so quiet. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to stay in the heart of the city in the shadow of the Empire State Building. Complimentary fresh ground espresso & hot/cold filtered water. Our queen room ended up being a king - bonus! Hair dryers are not great Extra fees not obvious upfront - paid $20 per day plus taxes on top of prepaid room.
Clean, friendly staff and excellent location. The rooms were large and quiet and the beds were comfortable. Wifi seemed to work well. Bonus free coffee and hot chocolate in the lobby.
got a good deal on Kayak.com. When I showed up to the hotel, they upgraded me to one of their best rooms for no charge. the room was beautiful, bed comfortble, and the space quiet. What a lovely refuge for a busy business trip! Thank you Avaol for a great stay: I'll be back! not a one!

The restaurant was nice. The location is good. The room had a nice view over the Empire States but it had too much noise from the street. The complimentary kits of the bathroom was too poor.

Given the price of hotels in NYC, this is an extremely excellent hotel for the price. Most hotels I have stayed in while in NYC for this price or a little less were nothing more than a room with just enough room for the bed. Not the case here. The room was very large compared to other rooms and very well kept. I will be coming back.

You can ear a lot of noise fron the streat
The strand is in a really great location if you're a first timer to NYC and want to be able to get to a lot of things quickly. Times Square, Empire State, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and the library are all super close, and the subway is right there to get you the rest of the way. Chelsea and the Highline also in walking distance. The room is fine, had everything we needed, was clean, and had a cool-looking shower, though we didn't end up with a view of the empire state building. Whenever the people in the room next door arrived or left, we could hear them like they were inside our room or opening our door. thin walls, I guess. Not a huge deal, just a little startling.
Brilliant location. Value given breakfast was included into price. Very friendly and efficient service. Clean and modern rooms. iPod charger in the room. The air conditioning was a little bit noisy. The rooms were a bit warm at night.

My room was clean and the location was good. I was surprised to be given a handicapped accessible room when I didn't need or ask for one. Two different hotel staff tried to gain access to my room twice within a half hour after I arrived, and another began cleaning my room the next morning before I had checked out.

The bedroom was very spacious, well fitted out and quiet. The bed was exceptionally comfortable - the best hotel bed we have slept in. The location at Bryant Park, a short walk from Times Square was unbeatable - nice quiet area but so close to all the noise and action. The hotel dining room (Koi Restaurant) was out of our budget, as were the room service and mini-bar pricing. A good job there were so many alternatives nearby. I can't remember ever having to go out to breakfast before!
The room was very large for NYC and comfortable, with a great view. We were upgraded to a suite, at no extra charge because we had an extra person.
I love this hotel. The tech needs a minor facelift. I love the USB ports in the plug ins and alarm, but the Apple connection stuff is a decade old and Apple always changes their stuff just enough that you have to keep upgrading random toys like iPads, which sucks because even an old iPad can do some basic stuff like watch Netflix and control your AirPlay Spotify and those things, which is way more valuable than if you buy an app for a buck and you play it for a week and then check a month later and its third on your list for storage used. So certain things I've had to upgrade and now I'm a plugin short, which is a super first world problem sounding issue. Just sayin', the whole thing seems fishy to me. This hotel is nice. I'd absolutely stay there again, and there's a Blue Bottel coffee like 3 doors down, which is nice because New Yorkers are an amazing group of people that I love, but they don't drink good coffee. There are Starbucks everywhere and they always taste burned (burnt?) to me. Blue Bottle is a bit pretentious, but when you're a great coffee in a great city, you're winning. Also, Bryant Park is across the street from the hotel, and they do a bunch of cool little concerts and stuff in that park, and they keep it clean and there is a solid brunch place in there and a Grill. Oh, yeah, and the elevators at the hotel are some weird cross between a coffin and a bad 70's porno shoot. It's really dark and there may be velvet on the walls, but it's too dark to tell. If you're in there with another person, it's a little tight. A person or two with luggage? Really tight. That's a hard one to fix, though. You'd be out of commission the entire time because it's the only way up. Maybe just brighten it a little bit. The bar downstairs used to be solid and I bet still is, but I didn't go down there this trip. It is Friday night and I just wrote that. That is not a good life sign.
Very central, close to everything in NYC, they upgraded us to a junior suite for free. Even if our room was a junior suite, we were on the 5th floor, with an bad view on the AC ventilation (very noisy at night).
Location, location, location. The size of the room was a major plus point. We were pleasantly surprised with the huge terrace space given to me (room #1401) and though it only had a partial view of the park, it was quiet for a midtown manhattan hotel. The entertainment planner Katherine was very patient and friendly and she managed to book reservations at Jean George and Gramercy Tavern for dinner and lunch respectively. I stronly recommend the higher floors as there are fewer rooms the higher you go, hence quieter. I think there were only 6 or 7 rooms on my floor. The doorman / bellboy was helpful with luggage and getting cabs. On check out day, there were few cabs available and doorman flagged a passing private limo for us at reasonable rate of US$85 to Newark. Will definitely return to this gorgeous Quintessentially manhattan hotel. not applicable

the location is great because I love Bryant Park. Old hotel, but redone kind of modernish. They should have left it old. We had a tiny room that looked out on ugly air conditioners from the other building. I had always dreamed of staying there but was very disappointed .
the location of course, the room with the view of the park,the complimentary wine in the cellar the first room was extremly small-we had to upgrade,also while the room was clean what quite often gets overlooked are the dirty finger/hand smudges on light switches,on door frames , door handles etc.I had to use a soapy washcloth to wipe this all down plus the surface of the leather seating

the style of the room they charge more for a 2 bed room because according to them we booked for one bed room. They added 100$ more per night.
The hotel is in a great location and our room was much bigger than other hotel rooms I've stayed at in New York. The bed turn-down was too early - before we were back from being out in the day and even when we requested a second turn-down it didn't always happen.
